The French rent receipt: what the law says
A rent receipt (quittance de loyer) certifies that the tenant paid the rent and charges in full for a given period. Article 21 of French law no. 89-462 of 6 July 1989 requires the landlord to provide it free of charge to any tenant who asks for it: charging for it is prohibited.
It must detail the period covered and distinguish the rent excluding charges from the service charges provision. If the tenant only paid part of the rent, the landlord issues a simple receipt for the amount paid, not a quittance.
